Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Research and evaluate innovative approaches towards energy efficiency, demand response, energy resiliency and renewable energy. 
  • Conduct energy audits or walkthroughs in commercial, industrial, and multifamily buildings. 
  • Develop project-specific measurement and verification (M&V) plans to support energy savings claims. 
  • Develop technical reports that summarize project scope, energy savings calculation. methodologies, M&V activities, M&V results, key assumptions and recommendation. 
  • Use analytical tools and M&V methodologies to evaluate the performance of, and make recommendations for, enhanced systems and equipment. 
  • Install and remove meters and data collection equipment.

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor of Science degree required in an Engineering discipline, Mechanical Engineering preferred. 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT-FE) Certification preferred. 
  • Minimum four years of professional experience in energy engineering or process/design engineering (HVAC or process). 
  • Basic understanding of statistics, linear regression modeling, and measure-based energy analysis tools. 
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, lighting, motors, and/or other custom commercial and industrial equipment. 
  • Understanding of demand side management, supply side management, permanent load shifting, and demand response. 
  • Understanding of energy codes and design standards – ASHRAE 90.1, Title 24, ASHRAE 62, etc. 
  • Understanding of benchmarking concepts and resources – ENERGY STAR, CEC, etc. 
  • Understanding of the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interact with clients, utility personnel, contractors, and project stakeholders to assess the technical feasibility of energy projects and programs
  • Perform field inspections of commercial sites to inventory and estimate usage of existing electrical equipment and determine electrical system capacity
  • Conduct pre-design analysis for sizing/resizing existing building electrical system capacity to support electrification, electric vehicle charging, battery storage, and PV systems
  • Research and identify available incentives and grants related to EV charging infrastructure at the local, state, and federal levels
  • Work closely with clients to maximize available incentives and optimize project economics
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, utilities, and municipalities
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address project requirements and ensure successful program implementation
  • Support selection of electrical equipment at each site; communicate with vendors to determine equipment costing for each project.
  • Conduct in-depth research, cost analysis and environmental impact on potential sites from field work, online research, demographic data and customer feedback and communication

Skills/Qualifications:

Schedule: M-F position with general office hours, typically 8am-5pm, though there can be some flexibility in start and stop times. Core hours are 9am-4pm. 40 hours per week is expected.

Remote capability: This position cannot be fully remote. We are looking for someone to work out of the Carlsbad, CA or Oakland, CA office location. We might also consider candidates in the Portland, OR area who would report to our Portland office location. During the discretionary training period, there may be more in-office time, up to 5 days per week. Once fully trained there may be some flexibility to work remotely so long as it doesn’t interfere with the general need of the business and/or exceeds more than 2 days per week. Per policy, 3 days per week in the office are currently required.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in energy engineering or design engineering (HVAC or process).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required, Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.
  • Strong technical writing skills are a must – 30-page reports are a common deliverable.
  • Experience in the energy field, such as energy efficiency, distributed energy generation/combined heat and power, project economics/rate analysis, project design, renewable energy, HVAC, refrigeration, central heating and cooling plants is preferred.
