Concord Engineering Manager


Job Description

AESC, Inc. has an opening for an Energy Engineer with experience in technical personnel management, HVAC&R systems, industrial processes, renewable energy, building energy simulations, retro-commissioning and facility auditing. This position will manage the AESC Concord engineering office and provide technical assistance companywide for a variety of programs focused on commercial and industrial energy efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Manage the technical staff at the AESC Concord office


  • Work with the Engineering Services Director and Program Managers to allocate local engineering resources.
  • Monitor and adjust, if necessary, workload of local engineering and technical staff.
  • Administer and support the activities of local engineering personnel to improve technical and management skills.
  • Manage and approve technical staff work schedules, timesheets, expense reimbursement requests, vacation requests, etc.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews; make recommendations for promotions, hiring, and terminations.
  • Work with the Engineering Services Director to develop and train local engineering staff, as well as identify technical references and software necessary for engineering tasks.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance companywide in the following areas


  • Use of analytical tools and measurement and verification methodologies to evaluate the performance of, and make recommendations for, HVAC&R systems and industrial process equipment.
  • Site inspections and/or gather data needed to perform energy-related analyses of whole sites or specific end-use equipment.
  • Prepare written analyses of findings and recommendations for energy efficiency, demand response, and self-generation measures for submittal to clients.
  • Interact closely with Program Managers and clients in order to meet project deadlines, quality and budgets.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must have reliable transportation; this position requires considerable travel to utility customer sites.
  • Compliance with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Accurately track and record time spent on various projects (for billing purposes).
  • Perform other technical duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree required. Advanced engineering degree or MBA preferred.
  • Professional Engineer license in the State of California.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum of eight years technical experience in HVAC&R and industrial process fields.
  • Minimum of two years experience managing technical personnel.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork and interact with clients in a professional and responsive manner.
  • Ability to interpret and understand mechanical and electrical drawings as well as equipment nameplate data and manufacturer specifications.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as poly-phase electric power calculations, thermodynamic cycle efficiency and conservation of energy.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Proficient PC skills including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Proficient knowledge of energy analysis software is preferred.
